Poets of Dharwad

Dharwad is famous for its natural scenic beauty and has inspired many a poet and writers of national and international renown. The Jnanapeeth award- the highest award in literature, was conferred to two giants of literature , DR D R Bendre and Dr V K Gokak. Both the writers lived and wrote some of their finest works in Dharwad.

Dr Bendre (1896-1981)*	wrote with pen name of Ambikatanayadatta, was a great poet , dramatist , critic and orator. Published thirty five collections of poetry, four dramas and number of critical books. He has contributed a great deal to Kannada literature. A kannada artilce on Dr Bendre, in Nimmaputa.
Dr V K Gokak	a scholar and critic , Professor Of English and recipient of prestigious Jnyanapeeth Award for his epic " Bharatha Sindhu Rashmi" in Kannada.
Chennaveera Kanvi:	Poet of nature. 14 poetry Collections , known for his excellent poetic style.
Betageri Krishna Sharma ( 1900 - 1952)	AnandaKanda ,He wrote seven poetry collections and 3 novels. He was editor of Kannada monthly magazine "Jayanti" for a long time
