Dr.D.Veerendra Hegde Kalakshetra

  • Dr D Veerendra Heggade Kalakshetra has come up between the twin-cities of Hubli and Dharwad. 
  • A multi-purpose auditorium built by the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Education Society (SDM). 
  • An imposing building of terracotta exterior. The Kalakeshtra has been built using cement and concrete. The huge pillars and walls of the sprawling building has terracotta tiles on the outside. Intricately crafted terracotta pieces add a rare beauty to the building. 
  • The 35,000 sqft hall can accommodate over 1,100 audience. The centrally air-conditioned structure has a 2,800 sqft wide stage with six green rooms. The auditorium is equipped with state-of-the-art acoustics. Padded walls make the hall sound-proof. 
  • The red and brown cubical building has a pyramid-shaped roof. The 20,000 sqft roof has rectangular shingles embedded in metal. The 45-foot walls and huge pillars have wire-cut tiles. There are 10 arches on each side of the building.

Dharwad Pedha

Dharwad Pedha, the sweet from the state of Karnataka, has a history of close to 2 centuries. It is made of milk which is heated and stirred continuously, with added flavour and sugar. So whenever you visit Dharwad, be sure to enjoy the delicious Dharwad pedhas. However, of late the pedhas are available across various cities in Karnataka as well as Maharashtra.



High Court Bench of Dharwad

Today, the 4th of July 2008, is a historic day, not just for Dharwad and Mumbai Karnataka but for the entire state of Karnataka. Justice has finally arrived at the doorstep in Mumbai Karnataka. The High Court of Karnataka opens its Circuit Bench at Dharwad today.

Karnataka University,Dharwad



History 
The Karnatak University, Dharwad was established in the year 1949 at Mumbai. The location was shifted to Dharwad in October 1949. The university was officially inaugurated in March 1950. In the formative years the university had the leadership of Dr. D. C. Pavate as the Vice-Chancellor (1954 - 1967). The university campus has been named as Pavate Nagar in memory of the genius. This is the second oldest university in the state of Karnataka.


The Campus
The university campus is located at Pavate Nagar, Dharwad, Karnataka, INDIA - 580003. It is spread over a vast expanse of 750 acres on the hill named 'Chota Mahabaleshwar', one of seven hillocks on which Dharwad is beautifully perched. The campus is full of beautiful greenery and good gardens and parks. Quarters are provided to the teaching staff, non-teaching staff and employees of the university to stay on the campus. Recreation and sports facilities are also provided on the campus.


The Library
The university library with a vast collection of books and journals caters to the information needs of the students and helps them in their research work. The library is housed in a functionally planned independent building with a mezzanine floor, ground floor and first floor. It consists of a browsing hall, reading rooms and stack rooms.

Working of Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagara Palike

CITIZEN COMMITTEE CC Flash
Citizen committee is a citizen representation forum established at every polling booth across the city.
 
Composition of Citizen Committee:  It shall consist of 9 members who shall be registered voters.
  • The nine members shall be in the following age group
    • 18-22yrs : 1member
    • 22-28 yrs: 1member
    • 28-35yrs : 1member
    • 35-45yrs : 1member
    • 45-60yrs : 1member
    • 61yrs and above: 4members
  • I/3rd representation shall be from women
  • I/3rd representation shall at least be PUC qualified
  • There shall not be more than one member from the same family
One of these nine members shall be selected among themselves as the REPRESENTATIVE who shall represent in the Zonal Committee


Essential Qualifications to be a Citizen Committee Member: Any Citizen of the Twin Cities can be a member of Citizen Committee provided he / she
  • Is a registered voter in the respective polling booth
  • Has a strong will to serve the society as a volunteer
  • Can devote quality time for social service
  • Has not been declared legally disabled
Roles and responsibilities of Citizen Committee: Currently, the Citizen Committee is required to discuss the proposed strategies in the CDS report and prioritize the strategies for implementation.
Term of function: 120 days from the formation of Citizen Committees shall be the term of function for every Citizen Committee
Meeting of the Citizen Committee:   The Citizen Committee shall meet every fortnight.The date and venue for the meeting can be decided by the individual committees depending on their convenience. The meetings shall be chaired by the REPRESENTATIVE in the normal course and in his absence by any member authorized by him.
Quorum:  4 persons present in person shall be a quorum of the Citizen Committee for regular meetings.
Decisions / Resolutions:  All decisions of the Citizen Committee shall be taken by a simple majority of votes of the members present at the meeting. In case of equality of votes the chairman shall have the casting vote.
Withdrawal of Membership: Any member who fails to attend 3 consecutive meetings shall seize the membership.
Minutes of the meeting: The minutes of every meeting of the committee shall be recorded and read at the next meeting thereof and shall be confirmed either with or without amendment.
The incidental expenses towards conducting the first three meetings will be borne by HDMC which shall not exceed

ZONAL COMMITTEE
A Zonal Committee is a Committee formed at every Zone with in the Twin cities consisting of representatives of the various Citizen Committees in the respective Zones. It is headed by the Chief Zonal Officer from HDMC, of the respective Zones. There shall be 12 such committees formed in the 12 zones of the twin cities.

 

Roles and responsibilities of Zonal Committee:  To assist the Zonal offices of HDMC in Planning, implementation and monitoring of developmental activities in their respective zones.
Term of function:  Three years shall be the term of function for every Zonal Committee
Meeting of the Zonal Committee:  The Zonal Committees shall meet every month. The meetings shall be chaired by the Chief Zonal Officer of the respective Zone in the normal course and in his absence by any member authorized by him.
Quorum:  1/3 the strength of the committee present in person shall be a quorum of the Zonal Committee
Decisions / Resolutions:  All decisions of the Zonal Committee shall be taken by a simple majority of votes of the members present at the meeting. In case of equality of votes the chairman shall have the casting vote.
Minutes of the meeting: The minutes of every meeting of the committee shall be recorded and read at the next meeting thereof and shall be confirmed either with or without amendment.


CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Composition of the Citizen Advisory Committee The Advisory committee will comprise of nine members having representatives from different backgrounds like academicians, laureates, Professionals, Social Workers, Government Officials and NGO members.
Roles and responsibilities of Citizen Advisory Committee
  • To supervise the formation and functioning of Citizen Committees and Zonal Committees
  • To identify the activities of HDMC where Citizen participation is essential and also define the outline of participation
  • To provide the necessary guidance to the Working Group and the Citizen Committees in implementing the Action plan
  • To device a mechanism to monitor the performance of the Working Group and Citizen Committees based on the project.
  • To monitor the performance of the Working Group and the Citizen Committees regularly
  • Where ever it is found that the Citizen Committee is not functioning effectively the Advisory committee shall think of alternatives.
Meeting of the Citizen Advisory Committee: The Citizen Advisory Committee shall meet at least once in a month on the first Tuesday of every month. The meeting shall be chaired by the Chairman in the normal course and in his absence the Co-Chairman is authorized to chair the meeting.
Quorum:  5 persons present in person shall be a quorum of the Citizen Advisory Committee
Decisions / Resolutions:   All decisions of the Citizen Advisory Committee shall be taken by a simple majority of votes of the members present at the meeting. In case of equality of votes the chairman shall have the casting vote.

WORKING GROUP

1. Composition of the Working Group:   The Working group shall comprise of 12 members headed by the Commissioner, HDMC. The Working Group shall have 3 sub groups; one for each division of the Twin City. Each Sub group shall be headed by the concerned Executive Engineer and have 3 NGO members.
 


2. Roles and responsibilities of Working Group
  • To assist the Citizen Advisory Committee and the Capacity building agency in formation and running of Citizen Committees.
  • To assist the Citizen Advisory Committee in identification of activities of HDMC where Citizen Participation is essential
  • To prepare an Action plan defining the roles and responsibilities of the Citizen Committees for the identified activities.
  • To provide the necessary technical assistance to the Citizen Committees in implementing the Action plan
  • To assist the Advisory Committee in monitoring the performance of the Citizen Committees.
  • To rank the Zonal offices for their performance based on the inputs from the Zonal Committees.
 
3. Meeting of the Working Group:   The Working Group shall meet at least once in a month. The meetings will be chaired by the Chairman in the normal course and in his absence any one of the three Executive engineers authorized by the Chairman.

4. Minutes of the meeting:   The minutes of every meeting of the committee shall be recorded and read at the next meeting thereof and shall be confirmed either with or without amendment.

Scope of Work for the Capacity Building Agency & Tentative time lines
  • Work closely with the Working Groups during the entire activity.
  • Orientation to Citizen Committees & Zonal Committees on CDS and Obtain feedback / opinion on prioritization of strategies in CDS report.
  • Conduct training & Capacity building for all Citizen Committee & Zonal Committee members (each batch not exceeding 50 participants)
  • Conduct at least three meetings of Citizen Committee and two meetings of Zonal Committees successfully.
Note
  • Training kits (Kan and Eng), resource persons, venue, refreshments etc should be arranged by the agencies.
  • Should work under the supervision and guidance of Citizen Advisory Committee and Working Groups
  • Training programme of the members to include Orientation on CDS, team work, effective communication, positive attitude, roles and responsibilities of the CC & ZC members, conducting meetings, keeping minutes of the meetings & coordination between CC & ZC apart from other important and relevant modules as suggested by the agency and approved by the advisory committee.
  • Weekly report clearly mentioning the progress of activities against the set timelines and the outputs obtained should be submitted to the respective working groups
  • The working Group will work as technical support team and also supervise the over all activities. All ground work needs to be undertaken by the agency and its team.
  • The Total project period is 120 days from the start date & the timeline for obtaining the feedback on CDS is 10th March, 07.
  • The Citizens' Committees and Zonal Committees will be formed by 18th Feb, 07, the orientation and training for CC & ZC members shall start immediately.
  • To maintain continuous contact an office to be opened in Hubli Dharwad & must operate till the successful completion of the project.

Prime Attractions

Dambala
75 kilometers from Dharwad lies the Dambala famous for grape and guavas. Dambala flaunts of many temples, Dodda Basappa Temple being the best of them all. The Kalyani Chalukya period Basappa temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famed for its multizonal stellar shape. It has one of the most comely festooned doorsteps that is prevalent in any temple in western India. There was also a Buddhist shrine there in Dambala.

Annigeri
Annigeri is a prominent culturala and political center of ancient times. Several kings like Yadavas, Chalukyas and Hoysalas took over Annigeri. Annigeri was part of Kalachuris kingdom. Amruteshwar temple is there in Annigeri built in Kalyani Chalukya style. The temple has a roof supported by 76 pillars and curvings of mythological figures. This temple remains the venue for a festival during the month of December to January.

Gudda Guddappara
This tiny village is famous for a big fair of November in honor of Malhari, an incarnation of shiva who killed the demon.

Bankapura
Twenty kilometers from the railhead of Yalavigi on Poona-Bangalore line and 30 kms from Hubli, Bankapura has a fort. The Ranganatha Nagareshwara Temple has 60 pillars engraved of Grey sandstone. The splendid temple has an elegantly carved ceiling. Another notable temple here is the Sidheshwara Temple.

Gadag
Gadag situates 75 kms from Dharwad and houses the well-known temples of Vira Narayan, Trikuteshwara, and Someshwara. The large Trikuteshwara Temple has a principal place of worship that comprises of three lingas built up on the same stone. One can see fine-looking stone screens inside the temple. The Vira Narayan temple has a massive 'gopuram' built in the Vijayanagara style.
